Transgressive News - Transgressive at HMV's Next Big Thing Festival - February 2010 - Win Tickets!

- Transgressive Night 1 features Johnny Flynn (solo), with support from Mechanical Bride, occurring at Barfly on February 10th.
- Transgressive Night 2 features Mystery Jets, Two Door Cinema Club + one other act TBA, also occurring at Barfly, on February 14th (a quality way to spend your Valentine's Day, we feel...).
All acts will be debuting brand-new material from releases that they'll have out later this year (In case you're wondering why the Jets and Two Door are on there - it's because they're part of the Transgressive Publishing family and roster!).
Since tickets are no longer available, we thought we'd offer a little competition to Transgressive online fans... We'll be giving away a pair of tickets to each night - to enter, all you need to do is tell us the answer to this following question:
What are the names of the two bands that Transgressive is releasing in March to kick off our 2010 release schedule?
To enter the contest, please email transgressivehmvcomp@gmail.com with your answer, contact number and full name.
Hopefully see you down there!
For further info on the event as a whole, please check out http://hmv.com/hmvweb/navigate.do?pPageID=4771.

So So Modern - Crude Futures - Debut LP available to Pre-Order NOW and Tour Dates....

Crude Futures is released digitally on March 1st on Transgressive Records across Europe and available to Pre-Order on CD and strictly limited edition (300) 12" here, also as a bundle with their previous compilation album for only £15 (inc p+p).

Crude Futures' was recorded in New Zealand when the band took an eight month break from their relentless touring schedule. It coincides with a major exhibition (also titled ‘Crude Futures') by New Zealand documentary photographer John Lake which explores the burden of optimism in a constantly ‘apocalyptic' reality. The album also marks So So Modern's most complete body of work and represents a new era for the four-piece.
Formed in 2004, they have thoroughly acquainted themselves with the basement venues and clubs of the world. They have tirelessly toured throughout the USA, Europe and Australasia, leaving their audiences with lasting memories of their explosive and noisy live show.
With a maniacal sense of spontaneity, live is where the band really shine. So So Modern will return to the UK for an unrelenting assault on the live scene in January.
Upcoming UK live dates:28th January - Freebutt, Brighton29th January - The Lexington, London20th February - The Deaf Institute, Manchester21st February - Brudenell Social Club, Leeds22nd February - Harley, Sheffield23rd February -Head of Steam, Newcastle24th February - Sneaky Pete's, Edinburgh 25th February - Captain's Rest, Glasgow1st March - Moles, Bristol2nd March - Jericho Tavern, Oxford (with Errors)4th March - Scala, London (with Errors)

Two Door Cinema Club - Tourist History - Debut album out soon....

This spine-tingling genius collection of 3-minute pop masterpieces should help make anyone's year.
Here's the crack:
The album is undeniably pop, but draws on disparate elements including electronica/electro, rock and Afro-beats whilst remaining resolutely fresh and inventive. Pigeon-holing this band will be impossible. Formed at the age of 15, the band now say "We were playing music that we weren't enjoying, so we said ‘let's write some songs, without any pretence of what they'll sound like'. That's why we find it so hard now if people now ask us what genre we are."
The only constant between songs is the length of them - short! - redefining short, sharp and sweet. The songs average out at a pop-perfect 3 mins. Says Kev, "We've never seen the point of adding something on to make the song longer. Or to cram in lots of songs. We just wanted a really impressive first album, where every song could be someone's favourite."
Two Door Cinema Club will be touring their new album extensively through 2010, starting with a sold out UK tour and have just added 2 NME Awards Shows with The Maccabees plus a support tour with Phoenix.
Having already accumulated nearly a million listens online and being signed to one of the coolest indie labels around , the tour and debut album are sure to propel Two Door Cinema Club firmly into your consciousness. Watch them go....

Liam Finn - Liam Finn + Eliza Jane : Champagne In Seashells : New EP....

Liam Finn says that his new EP, /Champagne in Seashells/, is a "documentof a small moment in time." He's modestly referring to the busy twoyears since the release of his critically acclaimed debut album, /I'llBe Lightning/, and the nearly uninterrupted schedule of touring that hastaken him around the world multiple times. Having played his own sold-out shows on every continent, opened for theThe Black Keys and Eddie Vedder, and performed at the All Tomorrow'sParties festival, Liam is set to release a new EP world-wide this September.
Recorded in April at Roundhead studios in Auckland New Zealand on thesame analogue equipment that captured I'll Be Lightning, Champagne inSeashells is bigger and bolder, revealing new lyrical complexities andpointing in daring new musical directions. It also marks the debutstudio collaboration between Liam and live cohort Eliza-Jane. The selfproduced EP was mixed by legendary sonic wiz Tchad Blake (Tom Waits).
Lead single "Long Way To Go" encapsulates the magical dynamic of LiamAnd E-J's chaotic live show whilst tackling the anxieties of air travel, life on the road and homesickness.

Phew!
3 things must ye know about Esser's stonkingly good live show:
1. This Thursday he'll be playing the Luminare as part of the JD set. Joined onstage for a duet with the legendary Don Letts... You can win tickets from his myspace www.myspace.com/esserhq and click on the blog!
2. This Friday, in celebration of Esser being on the front cover of Notion magazine, they're putting on a secret flashmob party somewhere in the East End. We're not telling where - but it's ACE. And there'll be the opportunity to get your hair cut in the style of the man himself, before watching what promises to be a classic Esser performance. Tickets can only be won by txting "Launch" to Notion on 88101 (apparently this costs £1.50) then they'll text you back the secret location and password on the day!

Transgressive News - GRAHAM COXON SIGNS TO TRANSGRESSIVE RECORDS

Graham Coxon releases his brand new album “The Spinning Top” on Transgressive Records on May 11.
The album was recorded in London in Spring 2008 and features musical contributions from Robyn Hitchcock and Danny Thompson, amongst others. It was produced by Stephen Street.
“The Spinning Top” features 15 brand new tracks and marks something of a departure in sound and feel from previous Graham Coxon solo work. It is also unusual in that the songs follow a narrative – nothing less than the story of a man from birth to death!
Graham says: “The album is mainly an acoustic journey although there is, of course, some explosive electric guitar action. I wanted to show how exciting acoustic instruments can be, how dynamic and rich and heart-thumpingly raw they can sound at a time when acoustic music seems either too cute or too soppy. Obvious influences here are the amazing Martin Carthy, the late, great Davey Graham and the late, great John Martyn”.
“There are some guests too! Robyn Hitchcock supplies some counter-attack guitar, Jas Singh plays dilruba and jori with his friends Gurjit Sembhi on taus and Jaskase Singh on esraj. Danny Thompson plays the legendary Victoria, Graham Fox gives plenty of swing on the drums and sizzle cymbals and Louis Vause tinkles the ivories”.
“My friend Lucy supplies the voice of the wife and Natasha marsh channels the voice of the Medea-like enchantress”.

Dan Michaelson and the Coastguards - Dan Michaelson and The Coastguards

Produced with Valgeir Sigurdsson (Bonnie Prince Billy, Bjork) the record is a stunning work of barratone beauty. The press are raving (as the Times said in their lead review today...) And, as Transgressive Publishing, we're very proud of it.
Why not pre-order the record HERE
And if you still need convincing, here are some persuasive quotes:
"your ears naturally tune into Michaelson's skill at putting words to theparts of relationships that usually stay silent. The cruel asymmetry ofromance is addressed exquisitely, recalling the resigned grandeur of theGo-Betweens' Robert Forster " **** The Times"impressive - comes on like Smog fronting the songs of Ed Harcourt" Uncut"an intensely felt and sparsely drawn study of the beginnings and ends ofrelationships" **** Time Out"a set of frighteningly good songs **** The Stool Pigeon"a voice deeper and darker than most extended overdrafts - Michaelson is onendearingly poetic form" NME"an outstanding collection of quirky and bare to the bones songs" 8/10Rocksound"
Still need convincing?
